SRINAGAR: The residents of Beerwah town of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Monday staged a protest demonstration against acute shortage of water in the town.

The protestors staged a sit-in on vital Beerwah-Magam road and blocked the vehicular movement leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

“Holy month of Ramazan is on but the area is without drinking water for the past three months. The representatives of this area met the higher officials many a times but to no avail. So holding dharna was the only option left to press for our demands,” said a masked women holding bamboo stick in her hand.

Accusing the authorities of ignoring their plights, the residents said that acute water scarcity has hit their village. “We have been deprived of drinking water since December, the taps are dry and authorities do not bother to restore water supply,” said Naseer Ahmad, a resident, adding the women have to walk several hours to fetch water from local streams.

Another resident said that village was getting water from local water supply scheme but the scheme is defunct for last two months. The issue has been raised several times in front of the concerned authorities but to no avail, locals lamented. (PTK)
