Srinagar : CPI (M) senior leader and former MLA Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami Wednesday expressed concern over the heavy damage caused to orchards due to hailstorm in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Tarigami in a statement issued to press called for a comprehensive compensation for farmers and orchardists who suffered extensive damages due to hailstorm that wrecked havoc in Kulgam district this afternoon.
He also urged government to assess the damages immediately so that the orchardists will not suffer yet again.
Tarigami said, earlier in November last year, the orchardists also suffered a huge loss due to early snowfall following which the government announced meager compensation to them, which was also not provided to every affected farmer or orchardist.
The former MLA Kulgam also questioned over the non-implementation of Crop Insurance Scheme, saying that the farmers and orchardists will heave a sigh of relief if the scheme will be implemented. He also added that the scheme has been implemented in some areas of Jammu region but is yet to be implemented in Kashmir areas.
He also said that the scheme will also save the fruit growers and agriculturists in the event of losses suffered due to natural calamities.
