SRINAGAR : Residents of Checki-Budwani in Qazigund area in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday held a protest demonstration against the water shortage in the area.

Scores of the residents including men, women and children assembled on Qazigund Railway station Road and raised Slogans against Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) Qazigund. The protest demonstration led to disruption of traffic movement for hours on the busy road. Then a police party led by an officer reached the spot to pacify the protesters and to restore traffic on the road.

Water supply to their village has been snapped for the past one month and they were forced to consume contaminated water. “The consumption of contaminated water has led to water-borne diseases like jaundice and gastroenteritis” Bilal Ahmad Dar, a local from Checki-Budwani Village.

However the residents demanded that authorities must take measures to end the water shortage faced by locals from past one month.

When contacted Executive Engineer PHE Qazigund Ghulam Nabi Bhat he said due to the excessive rate of iron found in the water tank, the authorities had partially stopped the water supply for the said village, adding that “I assure to bring the matter into the notice of higher authorities and hopefully the problem will be sorted out soon.”

He also said,” We will increase water tanker supply to the area so that they will not face inconvenience”. (PTK)
