Sumbal : The government has failed to construct a foot bridge on the River Jhelum at Sumbal in Bandipora district, despite the work commissioned three years ago.

The foundation of the bridge was laid by MLA Sonawari and former Speaker, Muhammad Akbar Lone in January 2014.

Locals said that the work on the said bridge was commenced in 2015 but was halted when only a single pillar was erected. They said that people were shocked and aghast to see bridge being abandoned by government.

“The foot bridge was supposed to come up in place of a vehicular bridge that had been damaged and was declared unsafe.

The vital bridge connects Sumbal with Safapora and Nesbal areas in the district. Residents in the area said that they are facing great difficulties in traveling because of the absence of any connectivity on Jhelum.

An Official said that the total cost of the bridge is Rs 3 crores and 41 lakhs. “However, from three years only Rs 82 lakhs have been spent on its construction,” the official said.

“It clearly shows that the government is in deep slumber and is not serious to construct the bridge,” the locals told CNS adding that despite repeated requests to Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, nothing was done to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
