Srinagar: Restrictions are in place in many parts of summer capital Srinagar on Friday to prevent Ashura processions in civil lines areas, sources said.
Police sources said “restrictions have been imposed to maintain law and order” however religious organizations have termed these restrictions as “interference in religious matters”.
Restrictions have been imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Police Stations Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Kothibagh, and Maharaj Gunj areas of Srinagar, they said.
Police and forces have been deployed in large numbers in the city who have erected barricades to curb the people’s movement.
Muharram processions are banned in civil lines area of Srinagar since 1989 however such processions take place in Alamgaribazar area of downtown.
Witnesses said that thousands of Shia Muslims have gathered in Alamgaribazar area to mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
