SRINAGAR: Broadcast & Multimedia Journalist Association (BMJA) Kashmir demands to make charges framed against arrested Journalist Asif Sultan by police public besides asks police to explain why he was retained for six days without a formal FIR.

BMJA believes that the data collection is journalists’ job and the claim of police that “incriminating material” was found in his laptop can be accept as a reason to frame him.

BMJA further said that a journalist cannot be forced to reveal his source which is illegitimate in any democracy.

Sultan, an Assistant Editor with the monthly news magazine, Kashmir Narrator, was picked up from his home in Batamaloo on Monday night, purportedly for questioning, and since then police has not released him, BMJA statement said.

Apart from the mistreatment meted out to him in custody, he is also being put questions about his political ideology,” it said.

BMJA said that the police should understand the work and professional ethics of a journalist working in hostile situation in the Valley adding that the harassment of journalists will not serve any purpose.
