SRINAGAR: Several illegal constructions are coming up in some of the Srinagar’s old city areas in connivance of the concerned officials, residents allege.
The local residents said that at least 15 illegal constructions are coming up in Zainakadal, Aali Kadal, Wazapora and other adjoining areas of the old city also known as Shehr-e-Khaas.
“These constructions are being raised in connivance of ward officer concerned Manzoor Ahmad of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC),” a local resident wishing anonymity told GNS.
He said that building permission norms had been ignored while allowing several constructions in these areas.
“Ironically, the ward officer is unnecessary creating hindrance on one or the other pretext for those who have obtained permissions, and is not allowing constructions for them,” another local resident said. “He (ward officer) is allowing constructions only if people grease his palms.”
The locals have appealed the SMC authorities to look into the matter.
“Why should somebody having permission for construction, pay him the bribe? If somebody objects, the officer stops the constructions,” they said.
When contacted, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Riyaz Ahmad said that people should approach him if they have any such issues and assured that he will look into the matter. (GNS)
