Youth who hurled grenade arrested: Police

Jammu : Police on Thursday said it had arrested a youth for hurling a grenade at a bus stand here.
Addressing a press conference here, IGP Jammu, MK Sinha said that at 11:50 am there was a grenade blast at General Bus Stand Jammu in which one person from Hardiwar, Uttrakhand, was killed and 31 others— 10 from Jammu province, 11 from Kashmir and 9 others from other states including two unknown persons— were injured.
“As soon as we came to learn about the grenade blast, the police party swung into action and along with the civilians evacuated all the injured and took them to Government Medical College Jammu for treatment,” IGP said.
Unfortunately, one non-local Mohammad Shariq succumbed to his injuries.
He said based on eye- witness accounts and CCTV coverage, police were able to identify a suspect who was wearing a jeans jacket and was carrying a red rucksack.
“Immediately all Jammu nakas were alerted and they were asked to see if any person with given details about the suspect moved out of Jammu,” he said.
“We immediately shared the CCTV footage and other details of the suspect with the police check posts and instructed them to thoroughly check the vehicles leaving Jammu City. The man was spotted at the Ban Toll Plaza near Nagrota and was immediately apprehended by the SDPO concerned,” said the IGP.
During questioning, the man identified himself as Yasir Javeed Bhat alias Arhan, son of Javeed Ahmed Bhat of Khanpora Kulgam in South Kashmir.
“During the preliminary investigations, the accused disclosed that Farooq Ahmed Bhat, district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kulgam, had given him the task and had provided him a grenade. On Wednesday, Yasir left Kashmir and reached Jammu in the morning where he lobbed the grenade at the bus stand,” IGP said.
The IGP said also said that it was not possible to say at the moment if any other person was also involved in the attack. (GNS)
