SRINAGAR: The alleged nexus between government officials and contractors has not only kept Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) 6.60 crore road project from Zehnpora to Phelapora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district in limbo but also the substandard material is used under the very authorities.
Locals alleged that the 6.60 core roads under PMGSY scheme being constructed at a snail’s pace from Zehnpora to Phelapora PMGSY. They told PTK that the slow pace of construction work isn’t only negating the official claims but is also putting the precious lives of innocent citizens at risk as the area if accident prone.
Official sources said the contractor executing Rs 6.60 crore works has been using substandard material. Sources said government official responsible for executing work under PMGSY has given a free hand to the influential contractor allegedly due to some underhand deal with him.
They said that the PMGSY engineers are not checking the quality of the work despite repeated complaints from the. Sources added that the constructor belong to Kupwara district who is involved in frauds found in the construction of roads under PMGSY in the said area.
Meanwhile locals said that the youngsters removed macadam from the road by their hands as it was substandard besides laid without cleaning the surface.
Sources further said that the constructor has shared work with some other sub constructor in the district with almost 20% interested, which has also led to the use of substandard material.
Locals said that the slow pace of work on road has made their miserable adding that the contractor has failed to complete even 2 kilometers of stretch so far.
Sources said that subletting which is against the norms is also affecting the quality of works. They further added from last one year not a single official has visited to check the quality of work. They added that due to the political support nobody is able to seek accountability of the contractor. “We were threatened by the contractor when he was asked about the use of substandard material”, they added.
