Scores of people started their procession from Jahangir Chowk and proceeded towards Lal Chowk. Reports said that they were intercepted near Women’s College on the MA Road and many were taken into preventive custody. Police also used some tear smoke shells to disperse the mourners, reports said.

Another procession was carried out from Abi Guzar area but police foiled it also and arrested many as they reached in the press colony. The detained people were lodged in police station Kothi Bagh.

Pertinently, authorities have imposed restrictions in many areas of Srinagar to prevent traditional Muharram processions. Muharram processions in civil lines area of the city are banned ever since 1990, after militancy erupted in Kashmir.
